Reclaiming Your Energy Through Mineralization

A Conversation with Certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner Sofia Wilt

I recently had one of those conversations that completely shifted my perspective on something I thought I understood pretty well. When I sat down with Sofia Wilt, a Certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, I discovered there was a foundational piece I hadn’t fully grasped about health and healing.

We’ve all heard about minerals—iron for energy, magnesium for sleep, maybe calcium for bones. But what Sofia shared was so much deeper. She introduced me to a world where minerals aren’t just individual supplements we pop when we remember, but rather the very spark plugs that make thousands of biochemical processes possible in our bodies.

Sofia’s Journey

Sofia’s path into functional nutrition began when she became her own first patient. In her early forties, she went from being active and energetic to lying on the sofa, wondering what had happened to her life. After visiting five different doctors without getting answers or relief, she began researching on her own.

The breakthrough came through Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA)—a test that analyzes a small hair sample to reveal mineral patterns over a three-month period. “When I made this correction with mineral balancing, I went from being on the sofa to getting up and living my life again,” Sofia shared. “It was like someone had handed me an ancient code book.”

Why This Matters

What fascinated me was learning how mineral patterns can reveal whether someone’s nervous system is in fight-or-flight or rest-and-digest mode. The first four minerals on an HTMA test—calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium—tell this story clearly.

“Minerals are spark plugs,” Sofia explained. “They facilitate thousands of biochemical processes in our bodies. We have about 50 to 100 trillion cells, and every single one has mineral requirements for energy production.”

The Modern Challenge

So why are we so depleted? Sofia’s explanation was eye-opening: industrial agriculture has demineralized our soil. Where farmers once spread manure and compost, creating complex arrays of minerals, modern agriculture relies on just three main substances plus chemicals like glyphosate.

“We weren’t guzzling supplements like we are now,” Sofia noted. “We’re guzzling supplements because the soils are so demineralized.”

The Copper-Zinc Connection

One of the most striking examples Sofia shared was about copper toxicity—something she experienced personally. Copper, while essential, can become toxic when accumulated from birth control pills, copper pipes, and other modern sources. The balancing mineral is zinc, which happens to be widely deficient.

This creates a perfect storm: women exposed to excess copper, not getting enough zinc, often following zinc-deficient vegetarian diets. The result can be serious mental health issues that are typically treated with antidepressants rather than addressing the underlying mineral imbalance.

Simple Starting Points

While HTMA testing with a qualified practitioner is the most comprehensive approach, Sofia offered some accessible first steps:

  • Black Brew – humic/fulvic acid blend
  • The Gift – Mother Earth Labs
  • Adrenal Cocktail: coconut water, sea salt, and vitamin C
  • Nettle Infusion (nature’s multivitamin: Steep 1 oz (about 1 cup) of dried nettles in a quart of hot water for 4+ hours or overnight. Strain and refrigerate. Drink 2–4 cups daily for natural calcium, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and iron.

Connecting the Dots

What struck me most was how this illuminates another layer of the healing puzzle. In my work with nervous system healing, I often see clients doing everything “right” yet still feeling stuck in certain patterns.

As Sofia pointed out, “Our brain is probably our most nutrient-sensitive organ. If you aren’t giving it some of the fuels that it needs, you won’t manufacture a good mood.”

This doesn’t diminish the importance of emotional healing work—it enhances it. When we address the physical foundation alongside the emotional and spiritual aspects, we create conditions for deeper, more sustainable transformation.

Sofia’s journey from patient to practitioner reminds us that healing often requires curiosity and openness to information that might shift our understanding. As always, if any of this resonates and you’re feeling called to explore your own patterns more deeply, I’m here to support you.

PS: Here’s in the video promised add on regarding minerals and ADHD:

  • Children with ADHD often show low levels of calcium, magnesium, and zinc, which normally act as a buffer to psychological stress
  • Adults often display copper toxicity and slow oxidation (parasympathetic dominance)
  • A study found bismuth levels up to 8x higher in children with ADHD than in controls—adding a heavy metal toxicity layer to the picture
