HIP Monthly Business Update #1
Starting Out as New Practitioners – A Conversation with Kim Witt
Embarking on a new practice can feel both exciting and daunting. To make the journey a little lighter, my colleague Kim Witt (of Transformed by Truth) and I decided to meet regularly to share updates, insights, and encouragement. We both graduated from Jennifer Van Allen’s Holistic Intuitive Practitioner (HIP) program earlier this year, and we thought our conversations might also be helpful for others navigating similar beginnings.
(Early milestones)
Kim has already seen important milestones: her first paying client, a live interview in an online healing community, and her branding and website coming to life with the help of her daughter’s photography. While she has worked with energy and healing modalities before, she reflected that stepping into the business side of things has been a new learning curve.
For me, this period has been about groundwork. Alongside my full-time job, I’ve been forming my LLC, creating branding, and beginning a series of interviews with practitioners and experts—ranging from a grief doula to a functional nutritionist—each bringing a unique perspective on healing. Although I don’t yet have my first client, I am focusing on building a strong structure and keeping my perspective on abundance rather than comparison.
(Balance and grounding)
We also explored how to find balance while juggling multiple responsibilities. I shared how life in the Dominican Republic offers daily opportunities for grounding and sunlight: barefoot walks, ocean swims, and time outdoors. These practices aren’t just pleasant—they also support the body’s natural rhythms. Grounding helps regulate our electrical systems through resonance with the Earth’s frequency, while early sunlight supports circadian rhythm and vitamin D production.
(The role of practices)
Kim and I agreed that small practices can have profound effects. Among the themes we touched on:
-
The words we speak: especially “I am” statements, which shape identity and even affect physiology.
-
Muscle testing: a simple practice to let the body give feedback, useful even for everyday decisions like choosing supplements.
-
Breathwork and meditation: helpful for calming the nervous system, but best seen as a gateway. As HIP practitioners, we recognize that lasting change comes from updating subconscious survival response patterns—the deeply ingrained reactions that drive how we handle stress.
(Teaching element: Breathwork)
As part of the conversation, we shared two breathwork techniques:
-
4-7-8 Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, exhale for 8. This activates the parasympathetic nervous system, easing overwhelm and preparing the body for rest.
-
10-10-2-2 Breathing: Inhale for 10 counts, hold for 10, short exhale for 2, hold for 2. This helps quickly ground and interrupt cycles of anxious thought.
These can be done in just a few minutes—before bed, after a stressful conversation, or even quietly in a meeting.
(Looking ahead)
For the coming weeks, Kim is continuing to see new clients and explore outreach opportunities. I will be traveling—a surf camp and a work-related retreat—and aiming to stay consistent in sharing content.
(Closing reflection)
What I value most about these conversations is the reminder that progress isn’t only measured in clients or milestones. It’s also about cultivating resilience, presence, and community—first within ourselves, then alongside others.
We’ll continue these monthly updates and would love to hear from you: What topics are you curious about? Feel free to share your questions or reflections—we’d love to weave them into future conversations.
